About the Astar Award

To promote the integrated development of global film art and technology, and to recognize individuals and institutions who have made outstanding contributions in film creation, technological innovation, theoretical research, educational dissemination, and cultural exchange, the International Institute of Film Science and Arts (IIFSA) has formally established the annual international honors — the Astar Award.

The name “Astar” carries rich symbolic meaning:

  • A stands for Art

  • S stands for Science

  • Together, Astar echoes the phrase “star of images”, representing brilliance, vision, and creativity in the cinematic world.

"Astar" also alludes to the stars who illuminate the screen and those behind the scenes—filmmakers, researchers, technologists, and educators—who respond to contemporary issues through cinematic language, push the boundaries of artistic expression through technological innovation, and guide future narratives with deep humanistic care.

As a globally oriented award, the Astar Award aims to:

  • Celebrate excellence in film and media across diverse genres and regions

  • Honor pioneering work in film technology and theoretical advancement

  • Support and encourage educational leadership and emerging voices in cinema

  • Promote inclusive perspectives, cultural dialogue, and sustainable futures through audiovisual storytelling

Each year, the Astar Award will spotlight outstanding achievements across multiple categories, including Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Academic Research in Film Science, and Lifetime Achievements in Digital Arts and New Media, among others.

By fostering global recognition and connection, the Astar Award is committed to building a vibrant and inclusive future for film and media arts—where art, science, and humanity shine together.
